USAHA Conference Underway

KANSAS CITY- Leaders from the deer and elk industry are in Kansas City, Missouri to participate in the 122nd annual United States Animal Health Association conference. There are dozens of meetings throughout the week where state animal health officials, state wildlife officials, USDA/APHIS and representatives from Allied Organizations meet to examine issues and procedures. Representatives from several national and state deer and elk associations are in attendance at this year's conference. 

The next several days will offer key discussions and tremendous opportunities between the farmed cervid industry and federal and state regulatory agencies. This conference marks the second year the USAHA Committee on Diseases of Farmed Cervidae will meet as a full committee, having served as a subcommittee for several years. This committee is solely dedicated to reviewing industry issues and attempting to find possible solutions to those issues. At least one resolution will be offered by the cervid industry in this year’s committee; to identify different strains of CWD positive deer and elk found in farmed and free-ranging populations. This resolution was endorsed by the American Cervid Alliance Leadership Council several weeks ago. 

Cervid industry representatives are members of the following committees and sub-committees, which include Wildlife Diseases, Brucellosis, Tuberculosis and Parasites & Vector Borne Disease and Animal Welfare. These committees will have a full week as recommendations and resolutions urging USDA to make regulatory and policy changes, as they pertain to the various agriculture industries, are considered.
