Minnesota Red Deer Herd Depopulated; No New CWD Positives FoundSeptember 12, 2014From the American Cervid Alliance Newsroom
APHIS Clarification on ACA article: Minnesota Red Deer Herd Depopulated (9/12/14) APHIS would like clarify statements made in the recent American Cervid Alliance (ACA) article, “Minnesota Red Deer Herd Depopulation: No New Positives Found” (September 12, 2014) and subsequently posted in the USAHA News Alert Summaries on September 16, 2014. The ACA article states that, “According to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, the USDA did not allow any research testing in addition to the normal CWD test to be completed during the final depopulation of the CWD exposed herd.” USDA APHIS worked diligently to accommodate research requests for the collection of various blood and tissue samples from animals in CWD positive herds which were depopulated by APHIS with federal indemnity in FY2014. Specifically, samples were collected by several federal/state and university researchers during the recent depopulations of the PA and IA white- tailed deer herds. As noted in the article, the MN red deer herd had been under state quarantine since May 2012 and over the past 2 years state officials had managed the depopulation and CWD testing of over 300 animals in this herd. Research samples may have been collected at that time. However, no additional CWD positive animals were reported in all animals previously depopulated. As a result, APHIS researchers considered samples from the MN herd to have low value for research purposes. Further, APHIS did not receive any external requests for collection of research samples from the MN red deer herd during the recent depopulation.
